The impact of narcissism and schadenfreude on teamwork perception: An investigation in tourism enterprises in Van

In highly competitive business environments, effective teamwork is critical to the sustainable success of organizations. In this context, understanding the effects of individual personality traits on teamwork has gained increasing importance. The aim of this study is to examine the effects of narcissism and schadenfreude tendencies on teamwork perception among employees working in tourism enterprises operating in the province of Van. A quantitative research approach was adopted, and a relational survey model was employed. Data were collected from 409 employees working in tourism enterprises in Van through a questionnaire and analyzed using SPSS and AMOS software. The validity and reliability of the measurement scales were tested using Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) and Cronbach's alpha coefficients. The results indicate that narcissism and schadenfreude have low but statistically significant effects on teamwork perception. While narcissism and the "malicious joy at others' misfortune" sub-dimension of schadenfreude negatively affect teamwork perception, the "benign joy at others' misfortune" sub-dimension does not show a significant effect. Additionally, significant differences were identified in certain sub-dimensions with respect to demographic variables. Overall, the findings reveal that dark personality traits may weaken team cohesion and perceptions of cooperation. This study aims to contribute to managerial and human resources practices by enhancing team effectiveness in the tourism sector.
