Abstract (EN)

The ney, made of reed, is an instrument used in Turkish and Turkish Sufi music. This study explores the ney in various contexts, creating a conceptual framework, and focuses on the ney opening method, a unique opening technique developed by Salih Demireğen. Three sections are created accordingly. The first section provides information about the ney opening instrument. The second section details some prominent ney players who lived and the opening techniques used on their neys, which are housed in various museums. The third section covers the opening technique invented and developed by Salih Demireğen and himself, the equipment he used in the opening technique, a laboratory study on the oleander tree, and the opinions of ney players working in various official institutions regarding the opening technique. Data for this study was obtained through interviews with Salih Demireğen and the ney players. The data obtained is divided into themes, categories, and codes, and supported by direct quotes. Furthermore, the results obtained from the laboratory study on the oleander tree constitute scientific data. The final section of the study provides a comparative analysis of the apparatus used in ney making with that used by Salih Demireğen, and describes Salih Demireğen's ney-making process. This study attempts to introduce a new technique and apparatus related to the ney instrument's opening method to the literature.
