Nilüfer Göle's understanding of modernity

In recent years, the modernity is one of the most debated issues in sociology in the West. Both the essential character and different perceptions of the modernity have been studied significantly. The issue of the modernity has been taken into consideration in Turkish society as well. Modernity has its impacts on the Turkish society during the last three centuries. The Turkish modernization has been discussed constantly.In this thesis, Nilüfer Göle?s perceptions of the Turkish modernity? and her arguments on both the essential character of variables and relations with West of Turkish modernization was debated with reference to a ?non-Western modernity?. Göle evaluated modernity from a local perspective and interpreted the Turkish modernization from a non-Western viewpoint. Göle by being detached from western modernization tries to understand the Turkish modernization without denying it. In this study, the formation of Göle?s concept of ?non-western modernity? and her sociological standpoint were analyzed with reference to the effects of different social scientists who examine the modernity from pluralistic perspectives.
