Abstract (EN)

The purpose of this study is to explore how mothers with children of normal and different developmental characteristics perceive and experience motherhood using the phenomenological design, a qualitative research method. The study group consists of 10 participants, including 5 mothers of children with normal development and 5 mothers of children with different developmental characteristics, aged 0-13 years, residing in the province of Edirne. The participants were purposefully selected from individuals with diverse demographic characteristics. Data were collected through face-to-face and online interviews using a semi-structured interview form. Descriptive and content analysis methods were employed during the analysis phase, with the collected data categorized into themes and sub-themes. The findings reveal that mothers' life experiences and their children's developmental characteristics significantly influence their perceptions of motherhood. Motherhood was commonly associated with concepts such as love, responsibility, and sanctity by the participants. Pregnancy experiences were described in terms of both physical and emotional impacts. Mothers of children with different developmental characteristics experienced intense phases of shock, grief, and acceptance upon learning about their child's health condition. Additionally, the breastfeeding process was expressed through both positive and negative emotions. Mothers hoped for their children to lead healthy, independent, and happy lives while also expressing concerns and anxieties about future uncertainties. This study highlights that the perception of motherhood is not merely a biological bonding process but a dynamic construct shaped by social, cultural, and psychological factors. The findings underscore the importance of developing support mechanisms for mothers and addressing the motherhood experience within a broader societal framework.
