Abstract (EN)

Nurettin Topçu, one of the intellectuals of the Republican era in Turkey, holds a unique position with his perspectives on the meaning of education, his expectations from it, his criticisms of the educational system, and his views on the vision and mission of educators, which are distinct from those of his contemporaries. The aim of this study is to understand and explain Nurettin Topçu's educational philosophy by interpreting his ideas and analyzing them from a critical perspective. This research builds upon and extends previous studies in the field, compiling them into a comprehensive resource that may serve as a foundation for future academic work. The study systematically examines the works in which Nurettin Topçu states his opinions on the philosophy of education. Methodologically, a critical literature review and document analysis approach has been adopted. The research design is based on a descriptive model situated within the qualitative paradigm. It also features characteristics of a case study, aiming to examine a specific phenomenon in its natural context in a holistic and in-depth manner. This epistemological and methodological approach allows for a comprehensive analysis of the conceptual and theoretical foundations of Topçu's educational thought. The primary source of analysis in this study is Türkiye'nin Maarif Davası (The Educational Cause of Turkey), along with his other works in which he expressed his views on education. In contrast to the standardized and material-centered understanding of education in the modern world, Nurettin Topçu proposed an approach that places human nature at its core. The key components of his educational understanding include the state, the nation, culture, morality, and the individual. According to Topçu, the state institution and the upbringing of the child within it are among the most important issues in education. Schools are among the primary state institutions affected by the widespread transformation brought about by modernism. The uniformity imposed by modernity has even begun to influence individual thought. For this reason, schools and other public institutions resemble one another not only architecturally but also in their functioning and objectives. In this context, one of the main responsibilities of schools is to provide individuals with the knowledge of self-awareness. It is concluded that a life and an education lacking practical application alienate students from genuine learning, and that schools lacking technical training do not fulfill the purpose of education.
