Determination of environmental behavior levels of teachers

This study aims at determining and comparing Elementary School Science, Maths and Social Sciences Teachers' their environmental attitudes. Within this scope, "Environmental Literacy Questionnaire" was carried out to 792 teachers who worked in different cities of Turkey in 2014-2015 and 2015-2016 Academic Years. 183 MathsTeachers, 183 SocialSciencesTeachers, 200 Classroom Teachers and 226 Science Teachers participated in the questionnaire. In order to determine the branch teachers' levels of environmental literacy, Environmental Literacy Questionnaire was carried out, which consisted of 3 categories such as Personel Information Form, Attitude Scale towards the Environment and Environmental Behaviour Scale. Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) was applied in data analysis, in which descriptive statistics, independent samples t-test, oneway analysis of variance (ANOVA) and simple correlation was used. According to the findings of the study; It is observed that Science, Mathematics, Social Studies and Class teachers have a high level of responsible environmental behavior in the physical protection sub-dimension. It has the lowest average score of mathematics teachers while it has the highest average score of social studies teachers. It was found that the average scores of teachers and science teachers were close to each other. When the average scores are considered, social studies teachers have the highest average score in the sub-dimension of individual and social persuasive behavior, while mathematics teachers have the lowest average score. It is seen that the level of responsible environmental behavior of teachers working in all branches is high in this sub-dimension. It is observed that the average scores have decreased in the political and legal behavior sub-dimension. In this sub-dimension, the highest average score was obtained by social studies teachers and the lowest mean score was taken by mathematics teachers. When the average scores are considered, the level of responsible environmental behavior of mathematics teachers, classroom teachers and science teachers is low in the sub-dimension of legal and political behavior; social studies teachers were found to be moderate. According to the average scores taken from the general scale, it was found that social studies teachers had the highest points and mathematics teachers had the lowest score. When the average scores are considered, it is concluded that social studies teachers have high levels of responsible environmental behavior, and mathematics, class and science teachers are at a medium level. According to gender, age, occupational experience, level of education of parents, level of participation in environmental activities and membership of environmental non-governmental organizations, it was determined that the environmental behavior scores of the teachers showed a significant difference.
