"The awareness about the new meaning and main duty of the school."This study which is conducted according to the scanning model, contains the views of 10 teachers, 10 school principals, 10 heads of school and family union, 10 representatives of students, and 10 directors of national education, vice-directors, and branch office directors in the districts of Eyüp, Gaziosmanpaşa, and Fatih in Istanbul, in the school year of 2009-2010. This study is a qualitative one. In this study, the techniques of gathering qualitative data were used.In the research, the data were gathered by the researcher through the interview form which was developed according to the related literature. The interview form was constituted by 20 questions. During the interviews voice recorder was used. Following the form, interviews were conducted with provincial directors of national education, district directors of national education, provincial vice-director of national education, district directors of branches, teachers, school principals, heads of school and family union and representatives of students. Interviews were only done with participants who are voluntary to participate.According to the findings, school is not an institution which is desirable. In order to make schools as places that are looked for and desired, schools must be institutions in which the abilities of students are discovered through prioritizing the demands and desires of students. School should prepare students to the life after the school. In fulfilling this, it should function as an educator of individuals that will generate solutions to the problems of the society. At the same time, school should see its students as the important figures of the future and construct the future of the society with students. Hence, school should be an institution that educates not only minds but also hearts, as well. The realities of the global world should be followed by school livingly, be read thoroghly and school should be furnished with these realities. School is an institution that should meet the needs of students, and it should make a guidance to them and canalize them according to the choices of students, and it should prepare individuals to the life after school according to their individual propensities. By doing so, the skills and choices of individuals should be developed by school. School which is the instrument of transfering the social values to the new generations, should be a place where all humanitarian values are taught and practiced. At the same time, school should be an institution that would be the source of society in terms of information, research&development, meeting the needs of the society. Before anything else, it should give its students success and self-confidence.
