The effect of parents on gaining reading habits

The purpose of this research is to determine the reading habits of the secondary school students and to examine the role of families in the students' acquisition of reading habits. General screening, one of the quantitative research methods, was used in the study. The sample of the study consisted of 427 students and 426 parents studying at the second level of primary education in public and private schools in Turkey in 2021-2022. In the study, data were collected with the "Parent Form on the Reading Habits of the Families" developed by the researcher and whose content validity was ensured by taking expert opinion, and the "Student Reading Habits Form" for the students. The data of the research were made by using the SPSS 26 program through descriptive statistics (frequency and percentage). In the study, it was found that although the families knew the importance of reading and believed in the importance of being a role model, they did not read books with their children and did not participate in reading activities (going to the library, organizing reading hours, going to the book fair, etc.) using the busy work schedule and other responsibilities at home as an excuse.
