The purpose of this study is to identify management styles in high schools

The purpose of this study is to identify management styles in İstanbul high schools. The interview technique is used in the research and content and descriptive analysis are preferred as data analysis tecniques.In the first part of the study, the problem, the aim and the importance of the research are mentioned. A survey research design was used to investigate the purpose of the study.The data gathering instrument, management styles questionnaire was developed by the researcher Özcan,1996. Separate questionnaire forms were developed for teachers. Hundred questionnaires were pilot tested. Modifications were done on the questionnaire items on the basis of the pilot study. However a formal reliability test was not conducted to determine item and the whole questionnaire reliability.The questionnaire was sent to 300 teachers. 203 questionnaires from those teachers were returned.Descriptive statics were employed through the use of mean, standart deviation, t-test and Kruskal-Wallis H test for independent samples. Alpha coefficient was on 0,05 level fort he significance tests. T-test was conducted to test teachers perceptions for gender and Kruskal-Wallis H test was conducted to test teachers perceptions for age, experience and education.In the second part, the concepts of management, manager, education management and education manager are explained.In the third and fourth parts, the method of the research and findings obtained as a result of interviews with teachers in the schools are mentioned and certain comments are made.In the final section, the results of the research are explained and certain suggestions are made for the management of the schools with the help of these results.The findings of the study showed that teachers perceived a low level of autocratic and high level of custodial, supportive and collegial management styles.In general, multiple management styles were presented by the principals. Principals were able to present on appropriate management style under different circumstances. None of the school principals displayed only one of the management style. These findings indicate that the principals were flexible and contingent in their management styles.
