Learning and study strategies of high school students (A sample study in Orhangazi)

Performing the learning completely depends on preparing and using the effectual ways of the teaching and convenient educational environment and student?s learning strategies and obtaining effectual studying habits. If students do not know which subject should be studied by using which method, this influences their study efficiency negatively. Learning and using the learning and studying strategies by students are as important as learning other subjects.In this research high school students' perceptions of learning and study strategies were examined in terms of gender, parents' education, school types, grade and brach, how often parents read, having a working mother or not, father?s education, parents? income levels, having a room to study in, having educational support or not, the time used for studying, parents' approach to students' school life and lessons, students consciousness about learning strategies and students' grade levels.The extent of the research was 3527 students who are attending different types of high schools (anatolian high school, multi programmed high school for girls, vocational high school for girls, secondary school for the training of Islamic religious personnel and industrial vocational high school) in 2008-2009 educational year. The sample was selected from 312 students of those high schools."The Learning and Study Strategies Inventory (LASSI)" ,adapted into Turkish by Ülkü KÖYMEN, having 77 items and a Likert type scale, was used to determine students' studying strategies. In order to analyze the data, SPSS 13.0 programme was used and utilized to perform t test, one-way analysis, Kruskal Wallis-H test and aritmethical averages.The students learning and studying strategies show significant differences in terms of the type of the school, duration of study, parents? income levels, gender, resting time in front of the TV and computer, school life and students' consciouness about learning and studying strategies, and students' grade levels.Key words: learning, learning strategies, study strategies
