Determination of active vocabulary usage in written expressions of secondary 5th school grade students (Balıkesir/Dursunbey example)

The aim of this study is to determine the active vocabulary in the written expressions of secondary school 5th grade students. The research was carried out in 3 secondary schools in Dursunbey district center of Balıkesir. 200 of 245 students studying in 3 secondary schools participated in the study. The sample group of the study consisted of 120 female and 80 male students. The students were asked to write articles in 3 different writing types (memoir, autobiography, free-themed text type). A total of 600 written data were obtained from 200 students. These data were transferred to the electronic environment and evaluated within the framework of limitations according to the gender and writing types of the students. Since most of the students have similar characteristics in terms of socio-economic conditions, the data were not evaluated in this direction. All the data obtained were evaluated and the total number of words used was determined as 23423. 3045 of 23423 words are kind words. The number of frequency words, that is, the number of repeating words, was determined as 20378. In terms of vocabulary, students used 39 reduplications and 413 idioms in total. No examples of proverbial use were encountered in any of the written data obtained from 200 students. In total, the most use of words is in the memory type. The least use of words is in the type of free-themed text. When the data of the study were evaluated according to gender, it was found that the female students used a total of 14645 words. The number of various word usage is 1839. It was determined that male students used 8778 words in total and 1206 words in variety. As a result of the study, the words obtained according to gender and types were compared with the words obtained from the studies conducted in this field and common word lists were prepared.
