Determination of active words in the written expression of secondary school 5th grade students (example of Isparta/Gönen)

The aim of this study is to reveal active vocabulary in the written studies of 5th grade students in the study universe. The study was conducted in six secondary schools (Gönen İmamhatip Secondary School, Senirce Göltaş Secondary School, Gümüşgün Secondary School, Gölbaşı Secondary School, Güneykent Secondary School) in Gönen district of Isparta. All 60 students in the 5th grade are involved in the study. A total of 180 products were obtained from 3 sample types (memoir, autobiography, free subject type) from 35 female and 25 male students. Data were analyzed according to gender and type of writing. Since the students in the group share similar economic and social life, no classification was made according to socio-economic status. As a result of the analysis, the total vocabulary was determined as 17151 words. Of these words, 1925 variety words, 15226 is composed of repeated words. A total of 203 vocabularies consisting of reduplications, idioms and proverbs were found in the data. Female students used 11106 words in total and 1501 variety words. Male students used 6045 words in total and 1117 words in variety. Since the number of male and female students were not equal, the averages of these data were taken. According to this situation, female students used 317.31 words in average total and 42.88 words in average variety. Male students used 241.8 words in average total and 44.68 words in average variety. Female students, total word usage; whereas male students were more successful in using variety words. With a total of 143 vocabulary usage, female students are more successful than male students using 51 vocabulary. When the study is examined in terms of text types, memoir with 6243 words take the first place in total word usage. The memoir is followed by free subject type and autobiography respectively. In the use of variety words, free subject type comes first with 1125 words. The second is the memoir and the last one is autobiography. At the end of the study, the words obtained from the previous studies were compared. 579 common words have been reached.
