A study on the relations between perceived parent attitudes of 6th - 8th grade middle school students and their social emotional learning skills.

In this study, it is aimed to research on the relations between parental attitudes perceived by 6th-8th grade middle school students and their social emotional learning skills. The study group consists of 276 students (between 12 and 15 years old ) whose gender distribution is as such: 146 (52,9%) male and 130 (47,1%) female students from one state school in Esenyurt neighborhood and one private school in Büyükçekmece neighborhood in Istanbul. In this study, Personal Information Form developed by the researcher, the Leuven adolescent perceived parenting scale (LAPPS) adopted to Turkish culture by Seher A. Sevim and Social-Emotional Learning Skills Scale (SELSS) developed for the secondary school students by Kabakcı (2006) are used. The data is analyzed according to SPSS 20.0 program and in the data analysis, depending on the variables, it is benefited from ANOVA, independent t test, tukey test, and from Spearman correlation analysis. In the conclusion of the study, it is detected statistically sense-making and positive relations between students' perceptions of the parental attitudes and their Social-Emotional Learning Skills. Based on gender, certain differences were found among demographic variables from the sub-levels of social and emotional learning and problem solving skills and also again based on gender, some were found from parental attitudes by means of parental behavioral governance. According to education level of mother, among four sub-levels of social-emotional learning skills, it is found that only the communication skills differed. When compared with social-emotional learning skills based on age, only at the level of coping with the stress skills, a significant difference is found. Details of the data collected from the research is taken and interpreted. Accordingly, certain proposals are offered for the next implementations and researches.
