Abstract (EN)
Orientalism is a concept that is accepted to have started with Napoleon's 1798 Egypt Campaign and has the meaning of Oriental Science (Şarkiyatçılık). Orientalism, which can also be defined as the way the Western world perceives the East, influenced Western geography in the fields of science and art, starting at the end of the 18th century and until the beginning of the 20th century. Western painters, merchants and travellers travelled to the East by taking political duties from their countries, and as a result of these travels, books and catalogues containing Orientalist paintings, which are visual documents, emerged. With the influence of these paintings, developments have occurred in areas such as trade and tourism from the West to the East. Orientalist painting is not a movement, it is a set of subjects. The artists, who are described as orientalist painters, portrayed the eastern lands and the life there, which attracted attention during the period they lived, with the movements they adopted, and each of them reflected the East with their own perspectives. While there are painters who visit the eastern lands and paint, there are also artists who paint without visiting them, using only their imagination. These painters were inspired by literary works and the notes of travellers in their paintings, and they created their paintings by synthesizing their imaginations with the popular culture of the period. Carpets used in Orientalist paintings, in which Eastern architecture is tried to be depicted with all its details, have been used as an important detail by most painters, as they are among the most striking items. Orientalism and Orientalist painting; It is an important issue for our country.
