Abstract (EN)
This study titled Edirne under Ottoman Rule (1789-1839) aims to reveal the physical, administrative, economic, social and demographic structure of the Edirne as a whole by examining the archival documents, especially the Court records. As a result, by clarifying an unexamined period of Edirne, many results thought to contribute to Ottoman history studies in general have emerged. In this context: The general view of the period has been determined by taking into account the elements that constitute the whole physical structure from the city's connection with the land, sea and river routes to its geographical characteristics, from its religious and social structures to households and shops and changes in these elements. In the examined period, by identifying the population of city and the sub-district, the ups and downs in population figures and their reasons were explained. By analyzing the groups that constitute the Edirne population in various ways, many concrete facts and statistical results were reached. It is understood that the city has a privileged and unique administrative structure and management because it is the old capital city. This situation is noticed even in the handicraftsman organizations as seen in the administrators of the emirs and ulema categories in the city. In the examined period, by confirming the elements that constitutes the commercial and economic structure of the city and the changes in these elements, the problem of price and fees were clarified. It was determined that Edirne was highly influenced by especially the Russian Invasion and the Revolts of Dağlı, battes in the Balkans and their quality was also mentioned. As a result, it is possible to say that there are many elements that can be studied in itself by the way of illuminating an unknown period of the city.
