Abstract (EN)

Cancer is one of the most important causes of deaths in the world, including Turkey. Osteonecrosis of the jaws following tooth extraction is a major complication in cancer patients who have used bisphosphonate. In most cases, the treatment of osteonecrosis of the jaws is not successful. Even if the osteonecrotic regions are excised surgically and closed primarily, the process can cause more osteonecrotic regions. Teriparatide is a new synthetic parathyroid hormone, which has been used recently to improve the thickness and quality of bone. It is an alternative to antiosteoporosis drugs and antiresorptive agents. Teriparatide results in the stimulation of both osteoclasts and osteoblasts when bone resorption occurs, producing an anabolic effect. Recent studies have reported cases of bisphosphonate related osteonecrosis of the jaw (BRONJ) treated with teriparatide. The aim of this study was to investigate the biochemical and histological effects of teriparatide in a rat model of bisphosphonate induced osteonecrosis when the drug was given before and after surgery. The results suggest that teriparatide is effective in the prevention of BRONJ. Key words: Bisphosphonate, Teriparatide, PTH (1-34), Parathormon, Osteonecrosis, BRONJ
