Structural problems and conservation recommendations for panel paintings

This study aims to investigate the structure and behavior of the wooden surface materials of panel paintings. Layout of this thesis is structured to reflect the underlying mechanisms involved. Natural structure of the wooden panels is discussed to examine possible problems that could surface and conservation techniques that would be applicable to remedy such problems are presented. Two oil paintings on plywood panels, Şükriye Dikmen's "Flowers in a Vase" and Halil Dikmen's "Nu" from Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University - Istanbul Museum of Painting and Sculpture are examined, technically analysed and conservation recommendations are presented.
