Impact of patent applications on high-technology products: Turkey sample

The export of high- technology products is one of the most crucial issues in global World. R&D and innovation activities have also considerable impact on the export of high-technology products. The term "human capital" has undoubtedly quite a big role in the economic growth and development The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of human capital on the export of high-technology products between 1980 and 2015 in Turkey. The term "innovation" has been used to represent "human capital". The number of patent applications has been used as the innovation variable in the current study. The econometric analysis has been used to investigate the effect of patent applications on the export of high-technology products. Stationarity levels of the data have been investigated by using Augmented Dickey Fuller Test (ADF) and Phillips Perron (PP) Test. Johansen Cointegration test composed of Eigen and Trace tests has been applied to investigate the relationship between variables. The Granger Causality Test based on the Vector Error Correction model (VECM) has been applied to determine causal relationship between existing variables. The impulse- response functions and variance decomposition methods have been used to analyse the short-term relationship between variables. It has been concluded from this investigation that the number of patent applications has positive effects on the export of high-technology products for long-term and there is a causal relationship between the related variables.
