Abstract (EN)
The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of diode laser therapy that additionally apllied to the non-surgical periodontal therapy, on clinical parameters and IL-1β levels in peri-implant sulcular fluid in the peri-implantitis patients. A total of 20 subjects which were systemically healthy (8 females and 12 males) who presented to Van Yüzüncü Yıl University, Faculty of Dentistry Department of Periodontology and were diagnosed as peri-implantitis, were enrolled in the study. The peri-implant sulcular fluid samples (PISF) and clinical parameters (Gingival index (GI), plaque index (PI), probing pocket depth (PPD), bleeding on probing (BOP) and clinical attachment level (CAL)) were gathered and recorded before and in the 3rd months of the treatment. One side of the jaws was determined as test group and the other side was determined as control group. While initial periodontal treatment was applied to the control group, in addition diode laser therapy was applied to the implants that identified as test group. According to the results of the present study it was determined that the clinical parameters were decreased in both groups, after treatment. When compared between the groups, the GI and BOP scores of the test group were found to be significantly lower than the control group, after treatment. When the changes in biochemical data were examined, in the 3rd months of the treatment an increase in the IL-1β levels was observed in both groups. While this increase in the IL-1β level was statistically significant in the control group, it was not significant in the test group. This result may exhibit that the diode laser therapy provides an additional benefit on mechanical treatment due to its detoxification effect. As a conclusion, the increase in IL-1β levels despite the improvements in clinical parameters was seem to be related to the early recovery period of periodontal disease. However, further studies are needed related to laser therapy that using different doses and periods in the treatment of peri-implantitis. Key Words: Dental implants, peri-implantitis, diode laser, IL-1β, cytokine
