The effect of master voice and white noise on pain level and physiological parameters during orogastric tube installation in preterm newborn: A randomized controlled study

The study was conducted as a randomized controlled type experimental study to determine the effect of mother's voice and white noise heard during orogastric tube insertion (OGTT) procedure on newborns, on pain level and physiological parameters. The research was carried out in Derince Training and Research Hospital Alikahya Campus, 3rd Level Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, between October 2021 and October 2022. The sample of the study consisted of 75 newborns (mother voice group=25, white noise group=25, control group=25) who agreed to participate in the study as a result of the power analysis and met the sample selection criteria. The distribution of newborns according to groups was made randomly. Mother's voice and white noise were listened to the newborns in the experimental group before, during and after the procedure, while the newborns in the control group only underwent routine OGTT.As a result of these applications, the physiological parameters and pain of newborns were evaluated. In data collection, "Personal Information Form" to determine the sociodemographic characteristics of parents and newborns, "NIPS Pain Scale" to measure the level of pain before, during and after the procedure, and "Neonatal Infant Pain Scale NIPS" to evaluate physiological findings. "Baby Pain/Physical Parameter Evaluation Form" was used. The data obtained in the research were analyzed by transferring them to the IBM SPSS Statistics 23 package program. When the pain level of newborns is evaluated; It was determined that the mean NIPS score in the mother's voice group during and after the procedure was significantly lower than the other groups (p<0.05). When the physiological parameter results are evaluated; While the mean oxygen saturation values of the newborns in the mother's voice group were found to be significantly higher during and after the procedure compared to the white noise and control groups, the mean peak heart rate values were found to be significantly lower than the white noise and control groups (p<0.05).As a result, it has been seen that the most effective method in relieving the pain of the newborn during the OGTT procedure is the mother's voice. According to the results of the research, it is recommended to use the mother's voice as a non-pharmacological method in relieving the pain of the newborn and following the positive course of physiological parameters.
