Abstract (EN)

Fucoidan is one of the sulfated polysaccharides found in the cell walls and extracellular spaces of brown seaweeds. This study investigated the effects of fucoidan on some biochemical parameters in carbon tetrachloride-induced nephrotoxicity in rats. Thirty-two Wistar Albino female rats, approximately 7-8 weeks old and weighing 200-250 g, were randomly divided into 4 groups, each consisting of 8 rats: Control group (physiological saline p.o 8 days), fucoidan group (fucoidan 100 mg/kg/day intragastric gavage), CCl4 group group (physiological saline p.o 8 days + 8th day CCl4 1 ml/kg i.p single dose), fucoidan+CCl4 group (fucoidan 100 mg/kg/day intragastric gavage 8 days + 8th day CCl4 1 ml/kg i.p single dose). After 24 hours of the 8-day study period, namely on the 9th day, ketamine (90 mg/kg) was injected intraperitoneally and blood samples were taken from the heart. Glutathione levels were measured in whole blood and MDA, AOPP, Na, Cl, K, creatinine, urea, and BUN levels were measured in plasma. MDA, glutathione, and AOPP analyses were performed spectrophotometrically, while other analyses were performed with an autoanalyzer. As a result of biochemical analyses, it was observed that creatinine (p<0.007), urea (p<0.001), BUN (p<0.001), MDA (p<0.001), and AOPP (p<0.05) levels decreased in the fucoidan+CCl4 group compared to the CCl4 group, while GSH (p<0.004) levels increased. As a result; it can be said that fucoidan, which has antioxidant properties, alleviates nephrotoxic damage by reducing oxidative stress caused by CCl4 and has a protective effect on the kidney.
