Abstract (EN)

In this thesis, the use of the spiral form in visual art has been researched. It has been explored how different societies have approached the spiral form across various disciplines since prehistoric times, its contributions to visual art, and the primary source of inspiration, which is "nature." In this context, the historical, cultural, and artistic aspects of the spiral form have been examined in detail, along with its mathematical definitions and its role in geometric concepts such as the golden ratio. The symbolic meanings it holds in rituals and religious beliefs have been evaluated in terms of how they shape the worldviews of societies and influence their artistic productions. At the same time, through examples from Turkish and European art, the use of the spiral form as an aesthetic and conceptual tool has been investigated, revealing its connections to the cyclicality of nature and the concept of infinity. This research aims to present a comprehensive perspective on the impact of forms inspired by nature on both past and contemporary art practices. As a result, the findings obtained using qualitative research methods show that the history of the spiral form dates back to ancient times and has gained new meanings while being preserved over time. This form has retained its original meanings and has become a motif that continually appears in different disciplines and in our daily lives. As long as nature exists, the spiral, which can be mathematically defined and appears in many different forms, will continue to exist. This study has demonstrated how this form has achieved universality across all periods and societies. Therefore, it emphasizes how widely this proven universal shape is used across different disciplines, particularly in the field of visual art, and draws attention to the fact that this usage continues in the modern world and will also persist in the future.
