Abstract (EN)

Pottery has been an important part of human life for thousands of years. Terracota pots used for cooking and storing food are fired to make them more durable. Firing also makes ceramic products water-resistant and enhances their color and texture. The process of firing, which initially began with open flames, has evolved over time to become baking in ovens. Throughout history, the cultural structures of societies, changes and developments in their lifestyles have led to the evulation of the kiln and ceramic firing methods to develop and change. Factors such as geography, climate conditions, and vegetation have influenced not only the design of kilns but also the quality of the products to be fired. The objective of this thesis is to comprehend the archaeological sites where kilns used during the Roman Imperial Period are found and the structures of these kilns, and to compile archaeological data related to this subject. To this end, Roman period ceramic kilns found in excavations carried out in regions encompassed by the expansion of the Roman Empire, such as Italy, Spain, France, the Balkans, Hellas, Anatolia, some settlements in the Eastern Mediterranean, and North Africa, have been investigated. Additionally, examples from experimental studies conducted on Roman ceramic kilns are also provided.
