Abstract (EN)

Within the scope of this study, the existing system in the employment of individuals with mentally-emotionally disabilities was evaluated, aiming to conduct an in-depth examination of the perspectives of individuals with mentally-emotionally disabilities and their families, professionals working in the field, employers, and relevant non-governmental organizations regarding their employment. Based on the obtained data, the study also aimed to present comprehensive policies prioritizing the needs of individuals with mentally-emotionally disabilities in employment and to develop practical recommendations. In this context, data were collected from 37 individuals with mentally-emotionally disabilities, 8 family members of such individuals, 18 professionals, 8 representatives of non-governmental organizations, and 6 employers or employer representatives residing in the provinces of Ankara, Bolu, Elazığ and Istanbul. This qualitative research study utilized semi-structured interview forms, conducting in-depth interviews either through audio recordings (based on participant preference) or researcher notes. The audio recordings and notes were first transcribed and then subjected to content analysis using the MAXQDA 2024 software package. As a result of the analysis, the data were categorized into three main themes: challenges and impacts in the employment process, the role and needs of stakeholders in employment, and the current state of employment, policies, and potential improvements. The findings of this research have concluded that employment has vital importance for individuals with mentally-emotionally disabilities, that the communication and coordination between institutions is very limited, that stigmatization has a multi-layered structure, and that support systems do not function fully. In line with the results obtained from the research, recommendations have been included regarding the stakeholders of individuals with mental-emotional disabilities and policy makers in the context of the employment of individuals with mentally-emotional disabilities.
