Istanbul and Vize cities (Entry – analyze – text – glossary)

Sehrengizs are literory works which is generally written in mesnevi verse form and these works rave about beauties of and in the city. Sehrengizs firstly began to be written in XVI. century and comleted its aim giving its final writing in XVIII. Şehrengizs involve vital information in the terms of culture and social background about the cities which are mentioned in it. These literary works reflect the functions of the language of the era when they were written. The work which is named as Istanbul and Vize Sehrengiz was written by Davud the Scribe is comprised of 27b and 58a lamination with the missing head chapter and 683 couplet. This intense work was written in a fluent and comprehensible Turkish language but not in a causticity language despite the fact that it has lots of Arabic and Persian vocabulay. The author used guite intimate and vivid language redacting of his feelings and his life fairly. The work which is named as Istanbul and Vize Sehrengiz has the feature of Sergüzeştname (Adventure Letters) in the terms of its topic. Author mentioned some valuble names for him and also praised them. Initially, Davud the Scribe emphasized Istanbul and beauties of this city, especially underlined Hagia Sophia, Yeni Cami and Galata referred to places he saw and walked around going from Istanbul to Vize city and Corlu, described Ergene river vicinity and continued mentioning about beauties of and in Istanbul turning back again to Istanbul. This literary work reflects its era vividly and still has been surviving the idioms and utterances which were used by himself in it.
