Turkish version of the patient safety culture survey for community pharmacies: Evaluation of patient safety culture perceptions of pharmacy employees

In this study, "Community Pharmacy Survey on Patient Safety Culture" which developed by Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) was used. The survey was designed by AHRQ for evaluate safety culture of community pharmacy employees. With this study, the adaptation of the survey to Turkish, validity and reability analysis have been made. 392 pharmacy employees operating in Çankaya district of Ankara province constitute the working group of this research. Data was collected from participants through a face-to-face survey.Following the language validity of the survey was provided, the construct validity was examined by explanatory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). In order to determine the perceptions of patient safety culture of freelance pharmacy employees in Turkey, their correlations with positive response percentages were calculated over the areas determined by AHRQ. According to the results of this study, the percentage of positive responses in the areas of "Teamwork" (95.3%), "Staff Training and Skills" (91.7%) and "Physical space and Environment" (90.6%) is high. The lowest positive response percentage belongs to the field of "Staffing, Work Pressure, and Pace" with 56.2%. In the study of female employees, employees with high levels of education, the pharmacist employees and employees with less than 60 hours a year of work with more weekly working time there is the perception of a culture of patient safety. Concerning the literature review, no survey encountered in Turkey of the safety culture of pharmacy employees as a data collection tool for measuring and evaluation. Therefore, our adaptation study has importance as it is the first. The Community Pharmacy Survey on Patient Safety Culture is a valid, reliable survey with version of adapted in Turkish that can be used to measure and evaluate patient safety culture. In addition, reasons such as the working environment, employee training, labor intensity, working hours, and the adequacy of the number of employees affect the perception of patient safety culture. Therefore, improvements should be made in these areas to increase the culture of patient safety in pharmacies.
