Classical and contemporary republicanism in political philosophy: A critical comparison

The fundamental aim of this thesis called as ?Classical and Contemporary Republicanism in Political Philosophy: A Critical Comparison? is to demonstrate the historical and theoretical background of republicanism. Although, historically republicanism has been separated into two groups, which are called as classical and contemporary republicanism, it is possible to discuss that there is a reflective consolidation between them. Both classical republicanism and contemporary republicanism aim the institutional and principal embodiments which guarantee the civil liberties and political participation in the public sphere of the individuals who are entitled with the civic rights. Therefore the republican thought has never deviated from its basic idea. However, it has been preserving its principal consistency since the ancient times.This thesis which doesn?t only investigate the historical background of republican thought but also discusses the relationship between liberalism and democracy which are the two important streams, strongly aims to position the republicanism on the contemporary political philosophy. Hence, one of the main idea of this thesis is to prove that republicanism is consistency with liberalism and democracy on some critical issues including ?liberties, equality, citizenship and rights? in political philosophy.
