Abstract (EN)

The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of the use of supplements on the existing lean body mass due to protein deficiency, which is one of the macronutrients developed in patients who underwent Sleeve Gstrectomy surgery. The data of 60 patients, 45 females (%75.0) and 15 males (%25.0) aged 20-54, who applied to a Private Surgery Clinic, were used. Information forms containing general and health information of the patients, International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) data, 24-hour food consumption records to determine daily energy and nutrient intakes before and after surgery, and some anthropometric measurements including body weight, lean body and body fat mass values were recorded. taken. These measurements were repeated at the 7th, 30th and 90th days of the postoperative period. Due to the inability to adapt to the use of Protein Supplementation (PT) in some patients who were decided to undergo sleeve gastrectomy surgery, they were divided into two groups as those who received Medical Nutrition Therapy (TBT) or Medical Nutrition Therapy + Protein Supplement (TBT + PT) (15gr/day). A statistically significant difference was found between the groups in terms of protein supplement consumption (p=0.000). Repeated measurements were applied to evaluate the TBT and TBT+PT (group*time interaction) groups at the baseline, 7th, 30th and 90th days of lean body mass (%). The difference between groups (F=3.297; p=0.075) and group time interactions were not significant (F=0.317; p>0.005). However, the differences between the within-group means were found to be significant over time (F=202.784; p=0.000). Serious complications were observed in the intake of macronutrients and micronutrients in patients who underwent sleeve gastrectomy surgery. For this reason, the primary approach in the treatment of obesity should always be medical nutrition therapy. However, although protein supplementation has limited benefits in patients who were deemed appropriate and underwent surgery considering the indication criteria, it was observed that most patients could not comply, and the targeted daily intake could not be reached. For these reasons, before considering supplements, patients should be followed by creating personalized medical nutrition programs by dietitians who are experts in the field, and they should be supported with behavior change and exercise therapy.
