The use of materials for improving social norms in the classroom

This study aimed to determine the relationship amongst norm, concept and material when some teachers develop a number of social norms in their classrooms. Being called 'Developing and Wide Spreading a Professional Development Model For Teachers in Science and Mathematics', the present paper reported the results of this particular study, which is supported by TUBITAK with a project number of 108K330. A total of 30 teachers have participated in the project and 15 of whom were Science and Technology teachers. In this project, University lecturers from Teaching Faculty of Gaziantep University who have been working in Science and Math departments provided an in-service training course on classroom norms. It has lasted about four weeks. To see the effects of the course, the lessons of the teachers were video-recorded, a number of interviews were conducted and public surveys were completed. This is a case study. In this study, a particular teacher's videos have become the focus of our analysis (1st grade). The materials needed to create social norms were examined separately in Ahmet Teacher's videos. Then, the findings were compared. The results indicated that eight main abilities, materials should be related to students' daily life and be open to criticism. Also, the results indicated the subject matter should be useful in students' daily life and the materials used ought to offer practical benefits to the students.
