A study on street children: In case of Sulaymaniyah

Although the settlements within the borders of Iraqi Kurdistan have large reserves in terms of underground sources, it can be said that most of the society is not too strong in socio-economic terms. Generally, in Iraq, specifically in the ancient city of Sulaymaniyah which takes place in the Iraqi-Kurdish region, when the variables such as population with rural life codes, a non-productive economy, an extended family structure, a weak demographic structure and economic indicators take into the consideration, it seems to point out a weak sociality. This study aims to reveal the socio-demographic structures of the children working/forced to work in the streets in Sulaymaniyah and the socio-economic characteristics of the families in which they live through a descriptive framework. In this study, where quantitative research method was preferred, the questionnaire was applied on 100 people who were chosen by purposeful sampling technique. In the example of the phenomenon of street children in Sulaymaniyah, a societal structure with low socio-economic characteristics, poor educational links, economically inadequate family structure with many children manifest itself predominantly. The high girl proportion among the street children in Sulaymaniyah indicates a different finding from the literature. Keywords : Child labor, Iraq, Sulaymaniyah, Street Children
