The evaluation of the curriculum of social sciences 6th and 7th grades at the aspect of the teachers and students? point of views

Today we see fast changes in every field and these changes affect the educational systems. The changes in education make the changes in the curriculums unavoidable. Some changes have been made in Social Sciences Curriculum since 2005 -2006 educational year and a new curriculum has been prepared based on the constructivist approach. With the new curriculum it is planned to bring up an effective citizen who learns how to learn, knows his rights and responsibilities and adopts his own culture.In this study, the new Social Sciences Curriculum and learning-teaching process were evaluated. The evaluations were based on the teacher-student point of views. The opinions of the teachers and the students about the curriculum were collected with the help of two different scales. In the scale for students there were 47 items and there were 46 items in the scale for teachers. Both of the scales were in Likert type.The total field of the study was the 6th and 7th grade students in primary schools in Kütahya city centre and the Social Sciences Teachers charged in Kütahya city centre. The sample of the study was 14 primary schools located in Kütahya city centre and they were randomly determined. The 6th and 7th grade students were included in this study. 30 Social Sciences Teachers charged in Kütahya city centre constitute a part of the sample and their opinions about Social Sciences Curriculum were collected. SPSS was used for data analysis. Data were analysed with percentage (%), frequency (f), Anova and t-test.According to the survey results it was determined that the students had positive attitudes towards Social Sciences Curriculum and they enjoyed the topics of the subject. Teachers found the curriculum generally positive.Key Words: Curriculum, Social Sciences, Constructivist Approach.
