Relationship between the sense of citizenship and cinema films in social studies education

This research was carried out to examine the relationship between social studies teacher candidates citizenship competencies and cinema films. The research was designed as a method according to the scanning model. A mixed-pattern study was conducted using both quantitative and qualitative research methods. In quantitative part of the study for the collection of data, "The Sense of Citizenship Scale" prepared by İçen, Öztürk and Yılmaz (2017) was used. In the qualitative part, prepared by the researcher with expert opinions semi-structured interview technique was used with the interview form. In the quantitative part of the study, the data were collected from 150 teacher candidates in the social studies teaching department, in the qualitative part, within the social studies teaching department 10pre-service teachers who studies the last class "use of film in learning activities" course were studied. In summary, the following results were obtained from the research: - Social studies teacher candidates sense of citizenship was generally determined at high level. - Regarding the results of the quantitative study, with the level of citizenship sense of prospective teachers candidates; there was no significant difference in terms of gender, availability of internet in the home and the types of films they prefer. - In contrast, the pre-service teachers candidates sense of citizenship; a significant difference has been identified with the place of residence, the frequency of going to the cinema and the relationship of the films considered within the scope of the research. - Regarding the results of the qualitative study, based on the answers given by the pre-service teachers candidates in the interview form, the relationship of citizenship competencies with cinema films has been observed.
