The use of stories in social studies teaching and investigation of stories in social studies textbooks in terms of values and skills

It is of vital importance to equip and teach Students with social studies subjects, gains, skills and values in an effective way. Teaching with stories means presenting all the above knowledge and skills in an eclectic manner. Stories seem to be very useful to teach those skills as Social Studies course is very appropriate for this. This study aimed at showing the relationship and results of using stories in social studies lessons. Document review which iş a qualitative research method was used in the study to analyze the "values" and "skills" concepts merged into social studies coursebook units directly or indirectly. The 5th grade coursebook was analyze to see the related gains and concepts in the stories. It was concluded that the so-called stories were very effective to store and retrieve information about objected values instead of just memorizing them. Using stories in instruction systems is known to be very useful to convey the targeted knowledge, skills, data and concepts just like it was in the past. As mentioned above, the stories in 5th grade coursebook were analyzed in terms of values and skills and related suggestions were presented to Ministry of Education and related teachers according to results.
