Examination of social studies teachers' empathic tendency levels and conflict resolution skills (Bursa example)

This study was carried out with the aim of examining the empathic tendency levels and the conflict resolution skills of the social studies teachers servicing at different public secondary schools in Bursa. The sample of the study was composed of 100 Social Studies Teachers servicing in the second semester of the 2018 - 2019 educational year at the public secondary schools located in the Nilüfer and Osmangazi districts of Bursa. The practice schools were selected randomly. The Conflict Resolution Tendency Scale developed by Akbalık (2001) and the Empathic Tendency Scale developed by Dökmen (1988) were used as the data collection tools. Moreover, the personal information form developed by the researcher was used. Since the study had a quantitative nature, it was carried out by using the screening method. In the analysis of the data, the SPSS 22 package program was used. Again, in the analysis of the data, t test, ANOVA test, Spearman correlation analysis, Kruskal Wallis H test and Mann Whitney U test were used. It was determined that the mean score which the participant teachers obtained from the empathic tendency scale was 74.05±8.47. The conflict resolution skills scores of the participant teachers were 182.52±20.12. It was determined that the conflict resolution skills and empathic tendency levels of the social studies teachers composing the sample group were at a good level.
