Model development for concept teaching with constructivist approach in social studies

The aim of the research is to examine the effects of the teaching models related to the concept teaching based on Constructivist Approach on Concept Teaching. Fallowing this main objective, it was focused on the teaching of the specific concepts chosen by the 6th graders students and the researcher.The research was performed in two steps as pilot and main implementation by internalizing experimental model focused on independent group pre-test and post-test. Plot implementation was performed with the 6th graders students (N=180) studying at the primary schools in Ankara Sincan, during 2010-2011 Academic year. As for the main implementation, the research was performed with the 6th graders students (N=48) studying at the specific primary school chosen by the researcher in Ankara Sincan, during 2010-2011 Academic year.Research consists of five sections. The first section of the research is an introduction focused on the aim and the importance of the work, the case problems etc. Conceptual framework was dealt with in the second section, method and the process of data collection were referred in the third section and in the fourth section, the data obtained from the research was examined and data analysis was performed. Finally the fifth section includes suggestions related to the results of the research.During the process of data collection, quantitative methods were utilized. The Concept Achievement Test and Constructed Interview Form were used as support. The sample consists of 48 6th grade students studying at Atatürk Primary School, located in Ankara Sincan .The measuring system was developed by the researcher. The Concept Achievement Test consists of 25 view points and the level of significance was found to be 0,76. To be able to reach the aim of the research accurately and to be able to reach the more distinctive opinions about the teaching process, the followings were employed: Interview Form, Concept Test Errors, A Daily Self Evaluation Form, Sample Activities and Worksheets. The aforementioned were prepared to support the measuring system. The opinions of experts were obtained and their suggestions were taken into consideration during the process of preparing all the resources for measuring.As a result of the research it was identified that there is a development in the level of success, perception and knowledge towards the chosen concepts. It was also detected that the teaching model of Concept Teaching has the quality to support Social Study Lessons.Key Words: Concept Teaching, Social Studies, Constructivist Approach.
