ABSTRACT M.Sc. THESIS SOURCES OF RESISTANCE IN DURUM WHEAT {Triticum durum) AND ITS WDLD RELATIVES Aegilops spp. TO RUSSIAN WHEAT APHID [Diuraphis noxia (Mordvilko)fHomoptera:Aphididae)] AND USE OF RANDOM AMPLIFIED POLYMORPHIC DNA (RAPD) ANALYSIS TO DETECT GENETIC VARIABILITY IN RWA Mohammed Izzat GHANNOUM DEPARTMENT OF PLANT PROTECTION INSTITUTE OF NATURAL AND APPLIED SCIENCES UNIVERSITY OF ÇUKUROVA Supervisors: Prof.Dr. Serpil KORNOSOR Year : 1 998, Pages:73 Jury: Prof.Dr. Nedim UYGUN Dr. M.MiloudiNACHIT Dr. Moustapha EL BOUHSSINI This study was carried out to identify sources of resistance and mode of resistance in durum wheat and its wild relatives Aegilops spp. to Russian wheat aphid [Diuraphis noxia (Mordvilko) (Homoptera:Aphididae)], one of the most serious pest of cereals in several parts of the world, and to study the genetic variability in RWA populations from different countries using Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis to detect genetic variability in RWA. The results of the study showed significant differences among genotypes at the three mechanisms of resistance measurement antibiosis, antixenosis, and tolerance. Based on RAPD analysis of RWA, all the populations could be classified in to nine genetic groups at 75 percent similarity levels. Key words : Durum wheat, Diuraphis noxia, resistance, genetic variation. n
