Abstract (EN)

In the first part of the thesis, commercially available water-based varnish was applied to wood samples of Beech (Fagus sylvatice), Walnut (Juglans regia), Cedar (Cedrus libani) and Fir (Abies nordmanniana) by simple dipping method and its effects has been examined. In the next stage, in order to increase the effect and protection degree of water-based varnish, the same wood samples were treated with the solution formed by adding 10% and 20% (volume / volume) of grape seed oil and sesame oil, and the results obtained under similar trial conditions were investigated comparatively. In general, it was determined that the Water Repellency (SIE) property of the wood samples subjected to the experiments occurred within marginal limits. Fir wood that treated with water-based varnish by the addition of sesame oil and grape seed oil, lower volumetric swelling values of 1.3% and 36.8% observed while lower volumetric shrinkage values of 0.9% and 35.5% was found compared to the control sample. These findings are important in terms of explaining that Fir wood shows higher dimensional stability than other woods. It was understood that the hydrophobic, surface color and technological properties of the wood samples used in our study had positive effects in some trial conditions. It has also been found that both additives (grape seed and sesame oil) regulate a certain level of brightness values in beech wood samples for external atmospheric conditions, but for other woods the sesame oil/ varnish mixture provides a more limited degree of protection than the grape seed oil/varnish effect. In addition, it was observed that the pencil hardness values of wood samples increased at certain levels. It was determined that the color stability (∆E) of 0.2% to 96.3% occurred against UV radiation for wood samples except cedar wood, but the protection degrees of these materials against external atmospheric conditions were lower. Walnut wood samples showed a higher contact angle values of 7-12 ° than other wood specimens under similar trial conditions, while no significant increase in contact angle was observed for other wood species.
