Abstract (EN)

Just as the neighboring countries, Syrian Arab Republic is a nation-state whose boundaries were drawn by the Western countries. Having obtained its independence in 1946, Syria, where political stability couldn?t be achieved for nearly twenty years, a new era started with the Baath Party taking over the power. In 1970, with the Hafez al-Assad's military coup in Syria, there has been a break in politics, and the majority, Sunni population came under the rule of Nusayri minority. Hafez al-Assad's 30-year rule has created a turbulent and often alone Syrian state in domestic and foreign policy; however, despite his isolation, Hafız-al Assad tried to keep away from the policies running against his interests .ln 2000, after the death of Hafez al-Assad, Bashar al-Assad,who gave the impression of a leader with western-style education, who is open minded and reformist, took over the power ,and a new period started in Syria. Although foreign policies influenced the progress of the reforms, in Syria, important steps have been taken in areas closely related to the society. At the beginning of eleventh year of Bashar al-Assad's ruling, a series of public movement called Arab-Spring broke out and spread widely, resulting in Assad?s and Syria?s becoming isolated again. How the Arab Spring movements will end in Syria remains to be seen in time. An agreement between the opponents and Syrian management is likely to lead to results which may not only influence Syria, but also the Middle East .
