Abstract (EN)

The Evaluation of the Effects of Different Disinfection Processes on the Adhesion of Candida Species Patients With Complete Denture,University of Van Yuzuncu Yıl, Institute of Health Sciences, Prosthodontic Department, Phd Thesis, Van, 2019. In the absence of adequate prosthetic hygiene, dental plaques come be formed due to the attachment and proliferation of microorganisms in the prosthesis. Poor prosthetic hygiene results prosthetic stomatitis, endocarditis, pneumonia and gastrointestinal infections. Antiseptics, antibiotics, oxidizing agents, herbal extracts and enzymes are used to control dental plaque formation. The aim of this study is to compare the efficacy of the disinfectants present in the market on Candida strains, the common member of oral microflora, and to contribute to the related literature. The patients were divided into six groups of 10 persons as following; chlorhexidine and microwave, chlorhexidine and ozonated water, sodium hypochlorite and microwave, sodium hypochlorite and ozonated water, gluteraldehyde and microwave, and glutaraldehyde and ozonated water. Denture prosthesis belonging to each group were tested for Candida spp. before any disinfection procedure was performed and fungal burden counts were made. The microorganism load on the prosthesis was evaluated after 1 week and 1 month after using the corresponding chemical disinfectant. Data were analyzed by 2-way ANOVA and Tukey HSD tests. The most frequent Candida strains isolated from prostheses were C.albicans (n = 32; 53.3%), followed by C.kefyr (n = 11; 18.3%), C.glabrata (n = 7; 11.7%) and C.tropicalis (n=7; %11.7). In the comparison between the groups at the second appointment, a statistically significant difference was observed between glutaraldehyde and ozonated water group and chlorhexidine and microwave group (p: 0.04) and glutaraldehyde and ozone water group and chlorhexidine and ozone water group (p: 0.007) at the 1:100 dilution. When evaluating the number of microorganisms isolated from the prosthesis before the disinfection process between groups in the third appointment, there was a significant difference between the chlorhexidine and microwave group and glutaraldehyde and microwave group(p: 0.012),the chlorhexidine and ozone water group and sodium hypochlorite and ozone water group (p: 0.035) and the glutaraldehyde and microwave group (p: 0.001) in the number of isolated microorganisms. Based on the results of our study, it has been shown that the best result in denture care is;chlorhexidine in combination with microwave or ozonated water. It has also been shown that 6 different combinations used in the cleaning of dentures are effective in reducing the amount of fungal load, and this effect is shown to increase with the prolongation of the duration of use. However, the results we have identified for the correct selection of disinfectants to be used in dental hygiene need to be further supported by randomized, controlled trials.
