Application of Tanzimat in Bursa (1839-1863)

The main aim of this thesis is to evaluate applications of Tanzimat in the provinces within the example of Bursa between 1839-1863. The first chapter deals with how the center carried out its socio-economic program in the provinces between 1839-1850. Second chapter examines how property registration was realized in Bursa between 1857-1859. Third chapter focuses on how one of the first infrastructural projects of the center, Gemlik-Bursa road was constructed. In the thesis, we will consider center and periphery as mutually independent. When narrating how the Center planned its reforms the thesis also shows how provinces shaped the reforms launched by the center. The thesis also tries to establish a bridge how the Ottoman provincial economy was integrated into global capitalist economy.
