Abstract (EN)

A series of reforms that followed the Vaka-i Hayriye event, which took place during the reign of Mahmud II, which included a very critical period in the history of the Ottoman State, is defined in the diplomatics of the period by the concept of "usul-i nizam-ı müstahsene". One of the innovations brought about by this method is the jurnal method and the 'jurnal defteri' registers which are the products of this method. Officers who were assigned with the title of 'jurnal kâtibi' in township and sanjak centers arranged the jurnal registers in the weekly and monthly periods and sent them to the center. The most common jurnal type in these registers is the records of people traveling with mürur tezkeresi. However, information on the population such as marriage, birth and death, and the take place various events to the area, constitute the contents of these defters. In rare cases, various commodity prices and forensic cases are also included in the defters. It is also possible to obtain information on the economic life of the place, especially occupations, from the defters. Until now, the type of defters has been subject to very little study. The aim of this study is to find out how to use as a source of history from the jurnal defters by moving from the example of four defters belonging to Sanjak of Çankırı. For this purpose, in the first chapter, the definition of the jurnal defters was made and the findings related to the period and the application of the men-i mürur were revealed. In the second chapter, the information obtained from the defters was evaluated and the information on the day of the Çankırı period was given. The third chapter is the transcription of the Çankırı jurnal defters. As a result of this study, during the period of the construction of the modern state, when the subject began to be defined as an individual and his identity started to be constructed, jurnal defters have been found to be an important part of the public surveillance and control mechanisms of the central state authority. In addition, small additive have been made to the history of these sites in the light of the jurnal defters of the Çankırı central town and the Kalecik, Tosya and Milan towns.
