Abstract (EN)

Knowledge of teaching strategies, methods and techniques in education are the basic elements of education process. Qualified teachers should have knowledge and skills about the above elements. The purpose of this study is to evaluate teaching strategies used by experienced history teachers in teaching practice schools in the eyes of 123 history student teachers. With this in mind, views of history student teachers of Karadeniz Technical University of Faith Faculty of Education were gathered in the 2014-2015 academic year. The study illuminated knowledge and skills of experienced history teachers about teaching strategies of presentation, discovery, research and analysis. Besides this, problems encountered by experienced history teachers in the implementation of teaching strategies were also illuminated by this study. This research is based on qualitative approach in this study and open-ended questionnaires and semi-structured interviews were the main data collection tools. Open-ended questionnaires were administered to 123 teachers and semi-structured interviews were carried out with 19 teachers. The obtained data were analyzed by 10 NVivo qualitative data analysis. The frequency and percentage analysis of the data sets created within the scope of the research, descriptive statistics were used as indicators. In the light of the data, it seems that experienced history teachers in teaching practice schools do not have enough skills and experience regarding how to implement teaching strategies of presentation, discovery, research and analysis. Although experienced history teachers have positive views about these strategies and believe that they should these strategies, they encountered problems about classroom management and other issues etc. Besides this, research indicates that teaching strategy of presentation implemented by experienced history teachers does not support permanent learning. Furthermore, teaching strategies of discovery, research and analysis in history classrooms had positive impact on permanent learning of students in the eyes of history student teachers.
