Abstract (EN)
The research presented in this study was carried out with the aim of establishing to what extent the transition to a centralised education model had resulted in vacant school buildings, to evaluate the state of the now- unoccupied land and lodgements and to determine the real needs of the people living in the villages affected by the new system. At the same time, the study covers the effect of this on school life and teachers in the village and the villager's views concerning centralised education. The research used the scanning model and took place in the province of Çanakkale, constituting interviews with the muhtar (head man) and committee members of 30 villages connected to five townships included under the new system, of whom, depending on their socio-economic circumstances, a total of 25 muhtars and 94 committee members were able to be reached for their comments. The data in the study was gathered via these interviews in which pre-prepared questions on a form were asked; in addition, any other opinions on this subject that arose during the conversations were noted. The questions on the interview form were arranged under three main headings; personal details of the muhtar and committee members interviewed, topics relating to the school, education and transportation and an itemising and assessment covering the current situation of schools not participating in the centralised model. The data gathered was processed on a computer using the Minitab programme. The frequency (f) and percentage (%) of information given by the interviewees was examined. The data is here presented in the form of IS tables covering village schools, education and transportation. From these, by adding frequency and percentage distribution, the mathematical average (J?, %) with standard deviation (S) values were arrived at. Differences between the muhtars and committee members in interviews were analysed and found to be within limits which had 95% accuracy, after t-test examination. The listing that emerged highlighted and assessed the current situation of villages havingIV vacant schools compared with that of non-participating villages. Findings that emerged from this study were; that expectations of the villagers and teachers concerning education in the village were not satisfied, that the vacated school buildings were unutilised and left idle, and that, in general, apart from exceptional problems, centralised schooling was looked upon favourably though a higher quality education for pupils was awaited.
