Abstract (EN)
Breast cancer (BC) is a rapidly increasing disease among women worldwide. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial, which can be achieved through screening programs. The objective of our study is to assess the knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors related to breast cancer and screening among female patients aged 18 and above, visiting Tekirdağ Namık Kemal University Hospital Family Medicine Polyclinic. The goal is to enhance awareness, knowledge, and participation in breast cancer screenings among women. Our study is cross-sectional and descriptive. We conducted interviews with 252 female patients aged 18 and above, who visited the family medicine outpatient clinic between January 1, 2023, and June 1, 2023. A 47-question questionnaire was administered to the participants. Data analysis was carried out using SPSS 25.0. A significance level of p<0.05 was applied for all analyses. The age range of the participants in our research was 34.43±12.15. Of the participants, 59.1% were married, 77.4% were university graduates, and 58.3% were employed. In terms of self-examination, 60.3% of participants reported practicing breast self- examination, while 32.5% underwent clinical breast examination. Moreover, 60.5% of those above the age of 40 underwent mammography. The majority of participants were aware that BC is the most common cancer in women, and that it can be diagnosed and treated in its early stages. Participants demonstrated better knowledge of BC symptoms compared to their understanding of BC risk factors. The study revealed that obtaining information about breast cancer significantly correlates with increased knowledge and utilization of BC screening methods. In conclusion, to raise awareness about breast cancer and encourage screening participation among women, it is recommended that physicians provide information and reminders during regular examinations. Furthermore, organizing consistent training programs nationwide and establishing a more effective follow-up system are essential steps to consider.
