Turkish language teaching in the second part of the primary school throught drama method: Dorothy Heathcotes

This descriptive study introduces the approach of "mantle of the expert" by Dorothy Heathcote in drama in education. A theoretical framework for developing verbal skills in the second part of primary school based on "mantle of the expert" is suggested. Functional examples are provided. An analysis of the video casettes of 90 min. Drama lesson based on "mantle of the expert" in which Dorothy Heathcote worked with 26 students from low socio-economic status is done in terms of the teacher's and student's verbal skills. On the other hand, "mantle of the expert" is evaluated with respect to the learning and teaching theories, especially the scenario based learning theory. As a result, it is found that, in the drama lesson based on "mantle of the expert" the teacher used mostly "questioning", and then "giving information" and "making explanations" respectively. It is observed that the teacher performed these verbal activities mostly as a "teacher in role". However, from the students point of view; "guessing" is used significantly and this is followed by "asking questions", "discussing" and "making explanation" Our results, on the other hand, suggest that there are similarities between the learning-teaching theory, especially the scenario based learning at the patterns such as "perception", "learning", "understanding" and "knowing".
