Examination of definitions of basic musical terms

The aim of this study is to examine of definitions of basic musical terms in theoretical and to reveal similarities and differences. Descriptive scanning model was used in the research. music theory books published in Turkey, is the universe of the study. Twenty books available for sale on the Internet are examples of the research. In this study, it is determined which data will be analyzed and collected in accordance with descriptive analysis steps. At this stage, the terms of measure, time, beat, time signature, rhythm and "tartım", which are included in the theoretical music books, were determined as the categories of the study. In the books examined, the definitions related to the determined terms are put forward one by one and tabulated. The similarities and differences between the definitions in the table are grouped and determined how many different definitions are made for a term. In addition, percentage (%) values were also included in the data analysis process. As a result of the research, it was found that 4 different definitions for measure term, 5 for time term, 6 for beat term, 4 for rhythm term, 3 for "tartım" term, 2 different definitions and 12 different nomenclature for time signature.
