A case study on implementing the 'Discipline based art education method' in the basic design lesson

University education is the most decisive and the last stage of preparation for life besides business life. The field courses taken in this period serve as a guide for people in their professional and business life. The main course of the art education-oriented departments is the Basic Design course. The Basic Design course is a step which provides the creation of popular designs by combining the basic rules of art and blending these rules with the vast imagination for students to develop their creativity and create original designs. The application-oriented education program for the students who take the Basic Design course will be insufficient for the artistic development of the students. This highlights the importance of the Multi-Field Art Education Method, which is an interdisciplinary approach. This research is a case study on the effects of Multidisciplinary Art Education method on the development of artistic perception in the education of associate degree Shoe Design department students. In the study, it is aimed to carry the skills of design students to look at artwork critically, to recognize artists, to comprehend plastic values, to interpret art work to the upper levels with the Multidisciplinary Art Education Method. Qualitative research method was used in the study. The data were obtained by using the structured interview technique, the first study before the research, the training with the Multi-Field Art Education method, and then the final study. The difference between the first study and the last study was evaluated by 10 independent experts. This study was applied to a group of 10 students of Konya Technical University School of Technical Sciences Shoe Design and Production Program, who took the 1st Class Basic Design course in the 2021-2022 academic year. Multi-Field Art Education consists of 4 basic methods. In the field of Art History, which is the first of these methods, shoe models and development stages of shoes were examined according to their periods. In the field of aesthetics, the interpretation of the shoe was made in terms of structural taste. In the field of Art Criticism, the evaluation and interpretation of the types of shoes used in today's and historical periods were carried out by the students. Finally, in the field of application, it was requested to put these gains into practice and to produce products. In the first week of the study, the students were asked to draw sandals with the theme of the Seljuk Period. On the same day, samples of sandals from the Roman Period were shown, and interviews were made on the questions in Table 2, and these interviews were recorded. These records are included in the study without comment. After four weeks of training, students were asked to repeat their drawings using the same theme. According to the results obtained; It was observed that after the education they received, the students developed an artistic perspective. Evaluating the sandal designs they drew, the experts stated that many of them produced works involving aesthetic concerns.
