According to The Times Democracy Party's foreign policy (1950-1960)

Turkey used its preference in favour of the USA, from among this bipolar grouping, which developed after the Second World War, and the pro-USA policies, which began during the İnönü era, also continued during the period of the Democrat Party, which came into power on 14 May 1950. In the face of the expansionist policies of the USSR, the Democrat party began to pursue an active foreign policy, with the support of the USA, both in the Balkans and in the Middle East, during its period of government. The reason behind the Democrat Party pursuing such active policies in these regions in particular was to look out for the regional interests of western states such as the USA and the United Kingdom, which it was in close cooperation with. It also ensured the establishment of a system of security against the dangers of communism, in these regions, which were the closest to their borders. With the United Kingdom taking more of a back seat, and the USA coming to the fore, against the threat of the USSR, following the Second World War, Turkey began to get closer to the USA – who were now being referred to the super power of the Cold War – rather than the United Kingdom, whom it had had close ties with since the establishment of the Republic of Turkey. Even if the United Kingdom seemed to have taken a back seat during the Cold War period, it did monitor the foreign policy incidents occurring between states, and used these as a vehicle to form a public opinion in a manner which looked out for its own interests, through The Times newspaper. While the route pursued by Turkey in foreign policy incidents between the years of 1950-60 was in line with the interests of Western states – and in particular the United Kingdom – there was no news to the detriment of Turkey during this period. However, when there were circumstances which did not conform with the interests of the United Kingdom in the region, it did use the power of the press as much as possible, by publishing news to the detriment of Turkey, through The Times newspaper Key Words: New world, The New York Times, CHP, DP, USA, Turkey, USSR, Second World War
