Abstract (EN)

Objective: The present prospective controlled study aims to evaluate the changes in thiol-disulfide homeostasis of asymptomatic patients with cholelithiasis and possible correlation between these thiol-disulfide balance parameters and HDL cholesterol. Material Method: 42 patients with asymptomatic cholelithiazis and 51 healthy volunteers, who were admitted to Gastroenterology Department of Ankara City Hospital between 15th September 2019 and 31st December 2019, were enrolled in this study the control group. Urea, creatinine, ALT, AST, ALP, GGT, LDH, total and direct bilirubin, ESH. CRP, albumin, protein, hemogram, triglycerides, total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, VLDL cholesterol, total cholesterol/HDL cholesterol, non-HDL cholesterol, native thiol, total thiol, disulfide, disulfide/native thiol, disulfide/total thiol, native thiol/total thiol ratios were examined in blood samples. The parameters of thiol-disulfide homeostasis in serum was examined using a new method that was developed by Erel and Neşelioğlu. All of the parameters were compared between patients and control group. Results: This study was enrolled 42 patients with asymptomatic cholelithiasis (mean age, 44.16 ± 13.35 years; 26 (61.9%) females, 16 (38%) males) and 51 healthy controls (mean age. 31.88 ± 13.27 years; 30 (58.8%) females, 21 (41.1%) males.). Native thiol, total thiol, albumin values were significantly lower (p <0.05); IMA, index-1, index-2, index-3 values were significantly higher (p <0.05) in the patient group compared with controls. The increase in disulfide level of the patient group was not significant. A positive correlation was observed between total thiol and total cholesterol (p = 0.028) and albumin (p = 0.033); triglyceride and albumine (p = 0.027); LDL and native thiol (p = 0.032) and total thiol (p = 0.036) and disulfide (p = 0.035) and albumin (p = 0.025); VLDL and albumin (p = 0.023); total cholesterol / HDL and albumin (p = 0.047); non-HDL and native thiol (p = 0.032) and total thiol (p = 0.032) and disulfide (p = 0.048) and albumin (p = 0.011). No statistically significant relationship was determined between HDL and the parameters of thiol / disulfide balance. Conclusion: This study demonstrated that thiol/disulfide homeostasis was shifted to oxidation direction and positively correlated with non-HDL value in patient group with asymptomatic cholelithiasis. Increased amount of non-HDL cholesterol might be effective in pathogenesis of gallstone by disrupting oxidative balance. There is a need for multicenter prospective studies. Key words: Cholelithiasis, thiol-disulfide homeostasis, lipid profile, non-HDL, HDL
