Problems, solution suggestions for chiidren with type 1 diabetes and their parents: Aualitative study

The study aimed to identify the challenges experienced by children with type 1 diabetes and their parents, as well as their suggestions for addressing these challenges. Data were collected through a phenomenological approach, a qualitative research method, using semi-structured interview forms designed for both parents and children. A total of 30 participants, including 15 mothers and 15 children, were involved in the study; fathers were not interviewed. The results were analyzed under three main themes: symptoms of diabetes, the process of diagnosis and adaptation to living with diabetes, diabetes-related challenges, and solutions developed to address these challenges. The results were discussed separately for children and parents. The study revealed that the most frequently reported issues by children were related to peer relationships and healthcare or hospital processes. The most commonly suggested solutions by children focused on the school environment. In contrast, parents frequently highlighted issues related to social life, healthcare and hospital processes, and home life. Parents' proposed solutions primarily addressed the school environment and economic difficulties. Parents reported a greater number of problems and solutions compared to children, suggesting that they experience the impact of type 1 diabetes more intensely. This study was conducted to understand the problems experienced by children with Type 1 diabetes and their parents due to the disease and to determine the solutions they developed or suggested. These results may guide children with Type 1 diabetes and their parents, health professionals and contribute to raising awareness in the society.
